MERWEVILLE

Gem of the Great Karoo

Tucked away in the heart of South Africa’s vast and arid Great Karoo lies the quiet town of Merweville, a place where time seems to slow down. Established in the early 1900s and named after Reverend van der Merwe, this small Karoo town is part of the Beaufort West municipality in the Western Cape. It remains largely untouched by modern development, offering visitors a rare glimpse into rural South African life.
Merweville is known for its striking landscapes, flat-topped koppies, open plains, and star-filled night skies that attract photographers and stargazers alike. With a population of less than 2000, the town fosters a strong sense of community, centered around its churches, schools, and local festivals.
Each year, Merweville hosts the ever-popular Dankfees, which brings together locals and visitors for a celebration of food, and culture. The town’s remote charm appeals to those seeking solitude, authenticity, and a deep connection to nature. A town where silence is audible and the sunsets awesome.

The residents of Merweville are committed to maintain a safe, clean and progressive environment.  A town where every resident may live with pride.

Where to Eat in Merweville

In Merweville, food is never rushed. It is enjoyed at its own pace, like the dusk settling over the Karoo plains. Here, meals are stories, told slowly, with laughter, dust on your shoes, and a sky so wide it makes you breathe deeper.

Die Boekklub

Behind an unassuming Karoo façade, Die Boekklub opens like a well-loved novel. Step inside and you’ll find warmth, conversation, and plates that speak of care and craft. This is where locals linger and visitors quickly feel at home.
Expect honest food made with attention, comforting dishes, freshly baked treats, and flavors that feel familiar even if you’ve travelled far to find them. Die Boekklub is not just a place to eat; it’s a place to sit, to talk, and to let time soften around you, page by page.
The stoep is a popular seating spot to watch the lifestyle of Merweville.

Karoo Koppie

Morning in Merweville often begins at Karoo Koppie, when the air is still cool and the town stretches awake. Here the coffee is strong, the smiles are easy, and the shelves hold small delights worth pausing for.
Light meals, sweet bites, and carefully made drinks make Karoo Koppie a natural gathering point – a place to refuel before the road calls again, or to simply watch the town go by. What makes it quietly remarkable is its integration with Aquaponics, where food and growing live in balance, as they have always tried to do in the Karoo. Guests are welcome to enjoy guided tours of the aquaponics system, learning how water, plants, and fish work together to create something sustainable and deeply in tune with the land. It’s the kind of spot where a quick stop turns into a long visit, without anyone noticing the time.

---

In Merweville, eating is part of belonging. Whether you find yourself at Die Boekklub with a plate and a story, or at Karoo Koppie with a cup in hand and the Karoo sun on your face, you’ll taste more than food – you’ll taste the town itself.
